PHS Celebrating Great GCSE Exam Success!
2010 Best Ever Exam Results

Year 11 students deserve huge congratulations for producing Parliament Hill School’s best ever GCSE results. 75% of the year group have achieved at least five good GCSE passes (A*-C).  64% achieved five good GCSE passes including A*-C passes in English and Maths. This represents a colossal 17% improvement on last year’s exam results.

This great success reflects the hardwork and determination of the students but also the commitment, encouragement and excellent support and guidance of all staff members.
Well done to everyone!

Alice

Parliament Hill Drama were proud to present their Summer production of ‘Alice’, their own take on Lewis’ Carroll’s classic nonsense story ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’.  This year the drama department tried something a little different and created the production ‘In Promenade’ inviting the audience to follow Alice on her curious journey all around the school.  Scenes took place all over the school, from the dance studio where the audience watched the scene ‘Through the Looking Glass’ to the roof outside the Art department where the audience were also able to see the current ‘Playground’ exhibition as they wandered through.

‘We are really pleased with the positive reaction from the audience.  We wanted to surprise them and make them think as well as making them laugh-just like Lewis Carrol did with his wonderful story! The students have worked really hard and had a lot of fun along the way and we are very proud of them.’

Mrs Solidum, Head of Drama

 Art Exhibition - 2010
Summer 2010, began in the Parliament Hill Art Department with an explosion of colour. This years’ exhibition ‘Play’, was crammed floor-to-ceiling with creative innovation.

Key Stage 3 students re-tiled our roof-terrace spelling out the title in giant lettering. GCSE Art students clowned around with other themes like ‘Circus’ and on a more serious note, A2 Art, Textiles & Photography students explored the strange nature of our ‘Passions & Obsessions’. A-Level Textiles students designed a range of samples and garments that would make Central St.Martins’ students quiver. A vintage-look menagerie emerged from GCSE Textiles students who used collage and sewing techniques to striking effect.

Photographers from our ever-popular A-Level course pushed boundaries with their degree level installations, short films & stills. Our photographers created professional quality hard-backs, studio shoots and off-site fashion photography that wouldn’t look out of place in ID magazine. GCSE Photography had its debut showing unstoppable talent, passion and determination from our Year 11 Twilight students.

It was a playful end to a year of hard work. We wish all our students a well deserved rest.

 Sports Relief - March 2010

Three hundred and sixty Parliament Hill School students (Y7 & Y8) took part in a fundraising ‘fancy-dress’ fun-run for Sports Relief on 19 March at the Parliament Hill athletics track. Runners dressed in pyjamas, tutus, super hero capes, fairy wings and wigs with a few even dressed like athletes. Some teaching staff ran alongside students offering encouragement. Pupils aimed to cover at least one mile during the session with some doing more.

Runner Amber Byrd said, “It was fun and good to raise money for Sports Relief to help others.”

Pupils took turns between counting the laps of others and running themselves for the fifty minute period. The event was organised by six Year 11 pupils (16 yr olds), who are studying for a Physical Education BTEC. As part of their course they have to do practical event management assignments.

PE BTEC student Ellen Osborn said, “Firstly we had to book the venue and publicise the event with posters and an assembly presentation in school to encourage the runners to get sponsorship, then we had to inform teachers and parents about the involvement of two year groups, finally we had to make sure the event went smoothly on the day with everyone getting to the track on time.”

 Y11 Student Ambassadors

ambassadors
Fifteen student ambassadors from Year 11 have been selected to represent different subjects at PHS. Their role is to motivate other students to enjoy and achieve in their studies by being positive role models and promoting good attitudes to learning. The ambassadors aim to communicate with teaching staff in suggesting
alternative approaches to some lessons and workshops and feeding back to teachers the opinions of their classmates.

The ambassadors have been introducing themselves to the student body at recent
assemblies and through leaflets and a display board in the Morant ground floor corridor.

Ambassador Nkiru Onyesoh says “If students enjoy their subjects they will work harder to achieve their goals. Because we are students we feel many of our aims our shared, we hope students will respond to our messages of encouragement”.

The student ambassadors plan to engage with their chosen department and interview students and staff to explore ways of enhancing the learning experience. They may suggest trips and activities which particularly interest learners.

These Year 11s are ‘senior ambassadors’ but in future there may be a structured hierarchy of ambassadors with a captain and deputies. The ambassadors are pleased that they are learning how to run an organization, sharing tasks, minuting and chairing weekly meetings.

The student ambassador project was inspired by visits to a school in Kenya which had a very strong prefectorial system. This has been adapted for PHS by identifying students who are good learners and would be good role models.

If students want to contact the ambassadors they should email:

 Raising Aspirations, Raising Achievement

Monday 1st February 2010 was an off-timetable curriculum day on the theme of “Raising Aspirations, Raisng Achievement”

Year 7 Students worked in different groups to their usual tutor groups and did a carousel of activities including “Building Learning Power” and “Learning to Learn” where they explored different learning styles and how to overcome barriers to learning.  This involved memory games, building a “Learning Tree” from drinking straws and solving puzzles. Year 8 students spent the day visiting the Science Museum.

Year 9 had an Aimhigher Day. The Aimhigher programme encourages pupils to think about going to university, especially those whose parents did not go.  Laura Martin-Clark is the Aimhigher Co-ordinator at PHS and Vivien Barr is the Aimhigher Co-ordinator for Camden and together they organised a progression day for pupils to get them thinking about their futures.

The day began for year 9 pupils with a play about progression from Year 9 to key stage 4, to sixth form and to university.  Then Year 9 heard from current university students about their courses, their universities and whether they live in halls, at home or in rented accommodation.  Later each year 9 pupil took part in a selection of the following workshops: Law, Business, Engineering, Fashion, University admissions, Police, Diplomas, Science.  The main idea is to get pupils thinking about future careers early so that they can make thoughtful and appropriate subject and course choices as part of a longer term plan.

Year 10’s day was organised around two events – a talk by BAM Construction about applying for Work Experience placements and the vital skill of filling in good job application forms and CVs, and a Study skills seminar delivered by “Maximise”. Feedback from students has been highly positive as they have learned about self-motivation and focus as essential ingredients of their future success.

Year 11 spent half of the day on intensive Maths revision, organised by Ms El-Damanawi, and the other half of the day working on their Technology subject.  Teachers reported high levels of engagement as Year 11 are now fast approaching final coursework deadlines and revision schedules for their GCSEs in only a couple of months time.

 Gold Award for Cultural Diversity

On Monday (Jan 2010) evening Mr Kavanagh and Ms Martin-Clark attended a ceremony at Deloitte's main office in Faringdon where they were proud to receive the Gold Award Cultural Diversity Quality Standard. This is a great honour as we are only one of 11 schools in the country to receive this award. This Quality Mark is awarded by the the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT), an independent, not-for-profit charity dedicated to raising levels of achievement in secondary education.

The Quality Mark recognises the very high levels of cooperation and
respect between all the different sections of our school community, and the strong ethos of Equality celebrated at Parliament Hill. We would like to thank everyone in the
school for their part in achieving this award, particularly the staff and students involved in our Black History and Cultural Diversity events, and everyone who works to
ensure all students achieve their best, regardless of their background or origin.

  Physics Trip to Switzerland

To enhance their understanding of particle physics 41 of our LaSwap AS/A2 physics students travelled to Geneva in Switzerland  to visit CERN, the European organisation for Nuclear Research. This was days before the Large Hadron Collider was switched on and the world’s largest experiment started. Unfortunately the huge security  prevented us from seeing the 27km diameter accelerator which is deep underground but we did see research areas where sections of the accelerator and the detectors were being checked. We also had time to visit the beautiful city of Geneva. Some of us even had the energy to climb to the top of the cathedral to appreciate the great views of the lake and the snow capped Alps.

We were all greatly relieved to hear on our return that the switch on was successful and the protons are now colliding and producing data which will be analysed by labs across the world.

Tomas Rook, an A2 physics student, said “the trip was excellent, I wished it was longer.”

Ms Pountney said, “This was a fantastic opportunity to see Physics in action, we will definitely do it again.”

 Photographers in New York
Ms Hines and Mr Earl took fourteen Year 13 students to New York in the half term, giving a fantastic opportunity for those involved to expand their A2 Photographic
studies. It was an unbelievably busy, productive and very fun trip for all involved. Panoramic shots recording movement were taken on a ferry, looking back at the
dramatic horizon line. Rain, unintentionally, became a focus for the second day. The students documented droplets on surfaces, brightly coloured patterns of
umbrellas, reflections in puddles and skyscrapers disappearing in the clouds. Text and iconic symbols were captured at Times Square, where the bright neon
lights lit up the sky and the yellow cabs rushed past.

NY1

Throughout the trip the students were great fun and extremely hardworking. They embraced every activity with amazing amounts of energy, ignoring sore feet, rain
and an extended stop over at JFK airport! Another of the focal points for their shots was to document cultural diversity in the city, through portraiture. Since their
return the students have been printing and presenting their shots ready to display them in the Black History and Cultural Diversity Showcase, to be held on Wednesday
25th November from 5-7pm. Well done and a big thank you to all involved in the trip. These images are a preview of the work to be exhibited, look out for the work in the showcase on Wednesday 25th November.
 Curriculum Enrichment Day

curriculum-day09Curriculum Enrichment Day took place on Monday 5 October 2009 at PHS.  All year groups were involved in additional activities, trips or initiatives to enhance their learning and progression through the school.

Year 7 visited the Natural History Museum where they took part in Maths based activities.  Year 8 celebrated Black History & Cultural Awareness Month through Arts activities which included capoeira dance, film making and photography, self-portraiture, making people laugh, playwriting and music workshops. These workshops were staffed by professionals Arts practitioners.

(Above: Award winning TV director Michael Buffong works with Y8 students on a short video).

Year 9 listened to options talks with pathway advice and induction activities for progression into KS4.

Year 10 attended a Youth Philanthropy Initiative conference at PHS in which students learned about charitable organisations.  Year 10 were given the challenge to begin preparation in teams for a research and presentation based project which will continue over several months. This project will culminate in teams competing by presentation for a £3000 prize to give to a local charity of their choice.

Year 11 took a Maths GCSE assessment and extended sessions for option A subjects.  They also took part in LaSwap preliminary interviews.  Overall students responses to Curriculum Enrichment Day activities were very positive, demonstrations from the day will take place in forthcoming assemblies.
