1. Personal Development at Parliament Hill School

Intent

‘Students are educated to be inclusive global citizens, enabled to speak out, and make a positive difference to the world now and in the future’.

Our personal development curriculum gives students valuable opportunities to discover their passions and interests. It raises aspirations, self esteem and social outcomes. They are taught to understand the need to protect our environment, stand up and speak out against prejudice in all forms and to take action locally, nationally and globally on social and environmental issues.

Our curriculum is accessible and inclusive for all students. E.g. SEND, LGBTQ+

 

Implementation

The personal development curriculum is covered through the wider curriculum as well as through discrete lessons. It is underpinned by safeguarding and RSE policies. Informed by local context and curriculum.

Students are actively participating, showing kindness, consideration and an understanding of how to keep themselves safe.

Student make decisions that strengthen them personally and contribute to building their character.

 

Impact

Students are empowered to take advantage of every opportunity for growth and success. Students are taught in a rich and stimulating learning experiences.

Celebrating relationships that make a uniquely positive and supportive and diverse community.

Students understand the opportunities and challenges of being a young person in today’s changing world.

 

2. Careers Information and Guidance

Level 6 qualified Careers Leader employed full time – all students can self-refer for guidance. Staff referrals for 1:1 and group work.

All students have free access to Unifrog.

Careers education and labour market information is embedded throughout the curriculum. Core Careers curriculum that enables all Gatsby Benchmarks to be met, with additional tiers of targeted support for disadvantaged students and those whose parents are unemployed or did not complete higher education.

Skills Builder in Y7 and Y8. Y9 take part in a Careers Carousel and visit a University.

Work Experience in Y10 and Y12. Y10 Employability Day – CV writing, soft skills and mock interviews with employers. Y11 Post-16 options. Individual careers interviews with independent Careers Advisor in Year 11.

Careers Guidance interviews at Y12 and Y13. Regular careers talks throughout the year, and in particular during Women of the World week, Careers Week and Black History Month.

  

3. Enrichment/ Extra Curricular

Whole school enrichment days, extensive clubs list for before school, lunch time clubs and after school, annual school production, events most days throughout November for BHM, Women of the World Fortnight around International Women's Day, annual Parli Pride, annual International Evening, Year 7 theatre trip, annual Year 8 Residential, Student Council, annual International Day of the Girl at WOW Southbank, seasonal music concerts, KS3 Steps to Empowerment record, co-curricular activities within subject areas, partnered with Channing School for Latin Club and other enrichment opportunities

 

4. Diversity & Inclusion

Staff: Strategic audit of D&I with All-In Education culminating in a detailed action plan. A total of 10 hours whole staff D&I training over the last 18 months that has been led by Shalini Patel, The Black Curriculum, All-In Education, Bilal Harry Khan, as well as internal training led by AH. All staff involved in reading groups to develop racial literacy and confidence. Staff voice group led by HT.

Students: Explicitly taught through KS3 and KS4 Citizenship: Year 7 do a discrimination SOL that covers ableism, gender inequality, homophobia and racism. They also do a SOL on human rights, looking at LGBTQ+ rights, the Bristol Bus Boycott and Civil rights. They cover stereotypes and identity in Y7. Student voice groups facilitated. Whole school and year group assemblies. Pastoral curriculum.

 

5. Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development (SMSC)

SMSC School ethos is ‘High Achieving and Happy’ Centres the SMSC values.

E.g. restorative justice approach to behaviour for learning, trauma informed school underpins our approach in the classroom, social action prioritised.

Concepts are explicitly taught in RE & Citizenship lessons, but are also explored in other subjects, such as English and History.

 

6. Safe Lifestyles

Safeguarding topics explored during tutorials. Student voice used to identify emerging concerns and response planned accordingly, such as sexual harassment and abuse.

Online Safety signposted each year during Safer Internet Week, acceptable use of ICT policy signed each year. Focus in citizenship lessons and during PSHE Deep Learning Days.

 

7. Citizenship

Taught to all students at KS3, 3 hours a fortnight, combined with PSHE & RSE content.

Year 7 – Community & identities, human rights & protests, democracy.

Year 8 – Government & elections, authority, international relations.

Year 9 – The media & democracy, law, justice & rights, terrorism KS4 students choose either Citizenship or RE to study at GCSE.

 

8. Pastoral Curriculum

Half termly programme of learning/personal development. Daily tutor time programme – student leadership, SMSC topics, reflection & mindfulness.

Twice weekly assemblies.

Tutorial half termly, themed for each year group.

Two enrichment days each year. E.g. university trips, creativity day and employability day.

 

9. British Values

Rule of Law, Democracy, Individual Liberty – Year 7, 8 & 9 Citizenship (see Citizenship box).

Mutual Respect & Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs – explicitly taught in Citizenship, RE and through the wider pastoral curriculum.

10. Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE)

Taught as part of the Citizenship lessons at KS3. Delivered through Deep Learning days at KS4.

Year 7 – Financial literacy, mental health.

Year 8 – First Give social Action.

Year 9 – Media & democracy, terrorism, feminism.

Year 10 – drugs and alcohol, RSE Year 11 – careers, study skills

11. Health Education

Different elements taught through Computer Science, Citizenship/ PSHE, Food & Nutrition, PE and through the pastoral curriculum.

Currently reapplying for Camden Healthy Schools Award.

12. Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Year 7 – respectful relationships, puberty.

Year 8 – identity and healthy relationships, managing risk online.

Year 9 – relationships, sex , consent and contraception.

Years 10 & 11 – STIs, CSE, Sexual Assault & Harassment.
